VIRSIG 'Champions' National Cyber Security Awareness Month

VIRSIG announced today that it has become a Champion of National Cyber Security Awareness Month which is coming up in October 2019. Based in New York City, VIRSIG is a national technology firm with its finger on the pulse of the security sector. It will be joining a growing global effort among businesses, government agencies, universities, and nonprofit organizations to promote online safety awareness.

Coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), October's National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) has grown exponentially since its inception. The program emphasizes personal accountability and stress the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace.

“Cyber-security must be a top priority for private industry and our government. Both persistent actors and automated bots continually target servers of the smallest and largest businesses around the clock” said Shelomo Alfassa who oversees VIRSIG’s Emergency Preparedness and Critical Incident Management Planning program. He added, “All of us must take measures to jointly protect our critical infrastructure, it's not just a job for the IT department anymore. It is through participation in initiatives like Cyber Security Awareness Month that we reinforce the importance of security, not just in our workplace, but in our homes and communities, ultimately making security awareness an everyday practice.

VIRSIG’s contributions to NCSAM will include:

  • A general training session on cybersecurity awareness for all employees, using examples of how bad actors gain access to corporate email systems and networks via stealth.

  • Select employees will complete FEMA’s online certificate course, ‘Resilient Accord – Exercising Continuity Plans for Cyber Incidents,’ which aims to increase organizational awareness about the importance of incorporating cyber security solutions, and address vulnerabilities in existing operations

  • Strengthen essential company’s online accounts by adding second-layer 2-step phone verification in addition to username and password.

  • Upgrade the company’s managed firewall and add intrusion detection

NCSAM 2019’s overarching message is – Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. Michael Kaiser, NCSA’s executive director said: “We are thankful to our 2019 Champion organizations for their support and commitment to our shared responsibility of promoting cybersecurity and online safety awareness.”

VIRSIG’s design and engineering technology activities lends itself to the protection of organizations through innovative systems, custom-engineered software applications, specialized hardware, and secure high-speed monitored networks. VIRSIG is a federally certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business (SDVOB); an ISO 26000 compliant company, and a member-owner of the PSA Security Network and the Security Industry Association (SIA).
