(New York, NY) The very last day of the year, after a year of intense discussion among the House Committee on Homeland Security and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, President Donald Trump signed the Vehicular Terrorism Prevention Act of 2018.
“Congress is helping to take measures that will strengthen the security of the nation” said Shelomo Alfassa, VIRSIG’s Emergency Planner and Director of Communications. This Act directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to assess the activities that DHS is undertaking to support emergency response providers and the private sector to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the threat of vehicular terrorism; and based on such assessment, to develop and submit to the congressional homeland security committees a strategy to improve its efforts to support such providers and the private sector in that regard. Further, the Act will examine the current threat of vehicular terrorism; and identify methods on best practices to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the increasing threat of vehicular terrorism.

Alfassa added, “This legislature is very helpful as it will identify new training activities that DHS can provide for public intuitions such as houses of worship, to prevent and respond to vehicular threats. The passing of this act, demonstrates both the Congress and President understand that offensive vehicle attacks remain a viable hazard, and it’s admirable to see them working together to address it.”
VIRSIG was in attendance at the most recent policy briefing in Washington D.C. that focused on physical security measures to protect against hostile vehicle attacks. That event was organized by the Security Industry Association (SIA), and facilitated by The Storefront Safety Council. There, Rep. Dan Donovan (NY), then the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, noted the importance of the United States standing up and being prepared to fight against terrorism, including vehicular attacks.
