Mr. Alfassa is the founding employee of VIRSIG; he is VIRSIG’s Director of Communications.
He is our resident Emergency Management and Homeland Security professional, who is a former Deputy Commander of a DHS/FEMA national emergency response team. He's an active member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s First Responder Group, part of the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, and he represents VIRSIG as a secure member of the FBI InfraGard Program.
He is certified as as a Certified Emergency Disaster Professional (CEDP). He also has certifications as a federal Facilities Security Officer (FSO) and is an OSHA Authorized Instructor. In 2017, his contributions at VIRSIG were recognized nationally when he was honored as 'Communications Professional of the Year' and won a Silver Medal from the American Business Awards.
He has worked in both the public and private sectors, and has 25+ years public safety experience. He is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Government Affairs Committee, and the Section on Emergency and Crisis Management of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). He's an active uniformed member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary serving on the national staff as a Branch Chief.
He is an active member in good standing on the ASTM International’s ‘Homeland Security Applications’ Committee and serves on the Subcommittee that develops standards to address operational security controls. All standards developed by this Subcommittee are intended for use by the collective security industry, including private sector contractors and applicable federal government agencies. Areas of relevance of this Subcommittee include: secured credentials and biometrics for access control devices; access control; video, audio, and other monitoring, including IP cameras; intrusion detection and control; and integrated operational security system control systems.
He is the author and editor of several non-fiction books on history, as well as "Essays in American Public Safety and Emergency Management." In 2021 he was awarded the national ‘Citizen of Mission’ from 'Homeland Security Today.'
He holds a BA degree in Homeland Security and a Masters Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from American Public University. He also attended Harvard Business School where he earned a certificate in Sustainable Business Strategy.
At the company, he wears many hats, including serving as VIRSIG's Safety Director and Diversity & ESG Officer.
